Resistance Band Colors: Strength Level Guide
Resistance Band Color System Basics
Most brands use a color-coded system to indicate resistance levels. However, there is no universal standard - colors vary between manufacturers.
Common Color-to-Resistance Chart
- Yellow: Light (5-15 lbs) - rehabilitation and mobility work
- Red: Medium (15-30 lbs) - beginners and upper body isolation
- Green: Heavy (30-50 lbs) - intermediate strength training
- Blue: Extra heavy (50-80 lbs) - advanced lower body work
- Black: Ultra heavy (80-120 lbs) - power training and assisted pull-ups
Brand Differences
TheraBand, Rogue, and Perform Better each have their own color scales. Always check the specific brand's resistance chart rather than assuming color equals tension.
Choosing by Exercise Type
Upper Body Isolation
Bicep curls, lateral raises, and tricep extensions typically need lighter bands (yellow to red).
Lower Body Compound
Squats, hip thrusts, and deadlift variations require heavier bands (green to black).
Progressive Overload with Bands
Increase resistance by combining bands. A red and yellow band together provide roughly the sum of their individual resistances.
Signs You Need a Heavier Band
If you can complete more than 15 reps with good form, it is time to move up to the next resistance level.
