Tennis String Tension: Power vs Control
The Tension Trade-off
String tension is one of the most impactful variables in tennis. Lower tension adds power; higher tension improves control.
Lower Tension (45-52 lbs)
Trampoline effect adds power. More spin potential and larger sweet spot. Absorbs vibration, reduces arm stress. Good for slower swings and beginners.
Mid-Range (53-58 lbs)
Balanced power and control. Most recreational players find their ideal here. Works with most string types and frames.
Higher Tension (59-70 lbs)
Precise control for advanced players. Requires fast, consistent swings. Reduces spin potential due to shorter dwell time.
String Type Interactions
- Natural gut: All tensions, best tension retention
- Multifilament: String 2-3 lbs higher than gut
- Polyester: String 3-5 lbs lower than usual
- Hybrid: Different tensions for mains and crosses
