How to Improve Sprint Speed: Training Techniques, Drills, and Exercises
The Science of Sprinting Faster
Sprint speed is one of the most valuable athletic qualities across virtually every sport. Improving your sprint speed requires a systematic approach combining technique work, strength training, and specific sprint drills.
Acceleration Mechanics
Body Position
Your body should be at a 45-degree angle, driving forward with powerful leg extension. Keep your head down and eyes focused a few meters ahead.
Arm Action
Use powerful, long arm swings from cheek to hip. The arm action should be relaxed but forceful.
Maximum Velocity Phase
After approximately 20-30 meters, transition to upright sprinting. Focus on tall posture, quick ground contacts, and cycling your legs through high knee recovery.
Key Drills
Wall Drills
Lean against a wall at 45 degrees and practice driving your knees up with powerful leg extension.
A-Skips and B-Skips
These develop proper foot strike patterns and knee drive.
Flying Sprints
Build to near-maximum speed over 20-30 meters, then maintain that speed for 20-30 meters.
Strength Training for Speed
Squats, deadlifts, power cleans, and plyometrics build the raw force production needed for speed.
Recovery and Programming
Allow 3-5 minutes rest between maximal sprints. Limit speed sessions to 2-3 per week.
