Running Foam: EVA vs TPU vs PEBA
The Midsole Makes the Shoe
Midsole foam determines 80% of a running shoe feel. Three major types dominate the market.
EVA Foam
Traditional, lightweight, affordable. Returns 55-65% of impact energy. Compresses after 300-500 miles. Good for daily training at moderate paces.
TPU Foam
Better energy return (70-75%), lasts 600-800 miles. Heavier but more responsive. Cost-effective over time despite higher upfront cost.
PEBA Foam
State of the art. Returns 85-87% energy, lightest foam available. Improves running economy 4-6%. Expensive, 200-300 mile lifespan. Race day choice.
Choosing Your Foam
- Daily training: EVA or TPU
- Long runs: TPU for sustained cushioning
- Race day: PEBA for maximum speed
- Recovery: EVA or TPU with high stack
