Bike Saddle Height: The 109% Rule
Why Saddle Height Matters
The most important bike fit adjustment. Too low wastes energy and stresses knees. Too high causes hip rocking and back pain. Correct height improves efficiency 5-10%.
The 109% Method
Measure inseam barefoot (book in crotch against wall). Multiply by 1.09 for target height from bottom bracket center to saddle top. Example: 80cm inseam = 87.2cm saddle height.
The Heel Method
Heel on pedal at lowest point, leg straight without hip rocking. Move to ball of foot for ideal knee bend. Quick field check method.
Signs Saddle Too Low
- Pain in front of knee
- Disproportionate quad fatigue
- Cramped hip flexors on climbs
Signs Saddle Too High
- Pain behind the knee
- Hip rocking side to side
- Lower back pain after 30+ min
Adjust 3mm at a time over two weeks for best results.
