Sports Gear Storage Tips to Extend Lifespan
Why Storage Matters
Improper storage causes premature gear failure. Balls warp, leather cracks, adhesives break down, and fabrics mildew — all preventable with the right storage approach.
Balls
Store inflated balls at room temperature, away from direct sunlight. Do not stack heavy items on top. For off-season storage, reduce pressure by 20 percent to protect seams and bladders.
Bats
Store bats in a cool, dry place. Never leave them in a car — extreme heat weakens composite materials and warps aluminum. Wooden bats should lie horizontally to prevent gravity warping.
Shoes and Cleats
Clean and dry completely before storage. Stuff with newspaper to maintain shape. Store in ventilated areas — sealed bags cause mold. Cleats should sit with studs facing down.
Protective Equipment
- Helmets: Store on a shelf, away from sunlight. UV degrades the shell over time.
- Pads: Hang to air dry after every use. Never store damp pads in sealed bags.
- Gloves: Store baseball gloves with a ball in the pocket and rubber bands holding them closed.
Five Golden Rules
- Never store wet or sweaty gear — dry it first
- Avoid garages and attics (temperature and humidity swings)
- Use open shelving or mesh bags for airflow
- Inspect stored gear monthly
- Replace desiccant packets in storage containers every 3 months
