Badminton Venue Guide: Court Dimensions, Net Height & Facility Requirements (2026)
Official Badminton Court Dimensions
A standard badminton court measures 44 feet (13.4 meters) long and 20 feet (6.1 meters) wide for doubles play. For singles, the width narrows to 17 feet (5.18 meters). The court is divided by a net that stands 5 feet 1 inch (1.55 meters) at the edges and 5 feet (1.524 meters) at the center.
Ceiling Height Requirements
Indoor badminton venues need a minimum ceiling height of 25 feet (7.6 meters) for recreational play, while BWF-sanctioned competitions require at least 39 feet (12 meters). This prevents shuttlecocks from hitting the ceiling during high clears, which can reach heights of 20+ feet.
Lighting Standards
Proper badminton venue lighting ranges from 300 lux for recreational play to 1,000+ lux for international competitions. Lights should be positioned along the sides of the court rather than directly above to avoid blinding players looking up at the shuttle.
Flooring Requirements
Professional venues use sprung wooden floors with a PVC or polyurethane surface layer. The floor must provide adequate grip while allowing players to slide slightly during lunges. Concrete floors without proper cushioning increase injury risk significantly.
Net and Post Specifications
Badminton nets are 2 feet 6 inches (76 cm) deep and made of fine dark cord with a mesh no larger than 20mm. The white tape along the top must be 75mm wide, doubled over a cord or cable. Posts should be placed on the doubles sidelines regardless of whether singles or doubles is being played.
Finding a Badminton Venue Near You
Check local recreation centers, universities, and dedicated badminton clubs. Many cities have indoor facilities that convert basketball courts into badminton courts using temporary lines and portable nets. Annual memberships typically range from $300-800.
Building a Home Court
For outdoor courts, you need a flat area of at least 44x24 feet including runoff space. Asphalt or concrete works for casual play. Wind barriers significantly improve playability since shuttlecocks are extremely wind-sensitive. Budget $5,000-15,000 for a basic outdoor setup including surface, net posts, and lighting.
