Volleyball Knee Pads: Size and Fit Guide

Volleyball Knee Pads: Size and Fit Guide

By Priya Sutaria ·

Why Knee Pads Are Essential

Volleyball involves constant diving, sliding, and dropping to the floor. Without knee pads, players risk bruises, floor burns, and long-term knee damage. The right pair provides protection without restricting movement or causing overheating.

Padding Thickness: What You Need

Liberos and defensive specialists need thicker padding (10-15mm) because they dive most frequently. Setters and outside hitters can use medium padding (7-10mm) since they dive less often. Thicker pads protect better but can feel bulkier during jumps.

Thickness Guide by Position

Sizing Your Knee Pads

Measure the circumference of your leg 4 inches above the kneecap. Compare to the manufacturer size chart. The pad should fit snugly without cutting off circulation. If it slides down during play, go down one size.

Sleeve Length Options

Short sleeves cover just the knee and are best for hot gym conditions. Long sleeves extend from mid-thigh to below the knee, providing extra protection for players who slide on their thighs. Some players wear one long and one short pad for asymmetric protection.

Material and Breathability

Look for moisture-wicking fabric on the sleeve and gel or foam padding inside. Neoprene sleeves provide compression but can cause overheating. Mesh-backed sleeves offer better ventilation for long tournaments.
