What Is a Golf Handicap?

A golf handicap is a numerical measure of a golfers potential playing ability. A lower handicap indicates a better player. A handicap of 0 means a scratch golfer who typically shoots par. The average male golfer has a handicap around 14-15, meaning they typically shoot 14-15 strokes over par.

Handicap Index vs Course Handicap

Your Handicap Index is a portable number that represents your potential ability. Your Course Handicap adjusts this number based on the specific courses difficulty using slope rating and course rating. On a harder course, your course handicap will be higher than your index.

How It Is Calculated Using the World Handicap System

The WHS, adopted globally in 2020, takes your best 8 score differentials from your most recent 20 rounds. A score differential equals 113 divided by slope rating, multiplied by adjusted gross score minus course rating. Your handicap index is the average of those 8 best differentials, multiplied by 0.96.

How to Get an Official Handicap

Join a golf club affiliated with your national golf association such as USGA in the US or CONGU in the UK. Submit scorecards from at least 54 holes which can be three 18-hole rounds or combinations of 9 and 18-hole rounds played under the Rules of Golf with a markers signature.

Using Your Handicap in Competition

In stroke play, subtract your course handicap from your gross score to get your net score. In match play, the difference between players course handicaps determines how many strokes are given and on which holes based on stroke index allocation.

What Is a Good Handicap?

Scratch at 0 represents the top 1-2 percent of golfers. Single digit 1-9 represents approximately the top 20 percent. Bogey golfer at 18-20 represents the average recreational player. Breaking 100 consistently puts you around a 25-28 handicap, which is above the median for casual golfers.

Maximum Handicap

The WHS sets a maximum Handicap Index of 54.0 for all golfers, regardless of gender. This replaced the previous system where men maxed at 36.4 and women at 40.4. The unified system encourages inclusivity.
