Football Helmet Fit Guide: Size It Right in 2026
Why Proper Helmet Fit Matters
A poorly fitted football helmet can increase concussion risk by up to 40%. In 2026, new NOCSAE standards require precise fit measurements for all certified helmets. This guide walks you through every step of getting the right fit.
Step 1: Measure Head Circumference
Use a flexible tape measure placed one inch above the eyebrows. Record the measurement in inches and compare to the manufacturer size chart. Most adult helmets range from 20 to 26 inches.
Size Chart Reference
- Small: 20-21.5 inches
- Medium: 21.5-23 inches
- Large: 23-24.5 inches
- X-Large: 24.5-26 inches
Step 2: Check Padding Contact
The helmet padding should make even contact around the forehead, temples, and back of the head. There should be no gaps between the padding and the skin. If you feel pressure points, try a different shell size or adjust the inflatable bladder.
Step 3: Secure the Chin Strap
The chin strap should be snug but comfortable. When properly fastened, you should be able to fit only one finger between the strap and the chin. The helmet should not shift when you shake your head side to side or up and down.
Common Fit Mistakes
- Wearing the helmet too high on the forehead
- Using aftermarket padding not approved by the manufacturer
- Ignoring annual reconditioning requirements
- Not replacing helmets older than 10 years
When to Replace Your Helmet
Replace any helmet that has visible cracks, damaged padding, or is past its reconditioning date. Most manufacturers recommend reconditioning every two years and replacement after 10 years regardless of condition.
