Improve Vertical Jump for Basketball
The Science of Jumping Higher
Vertical jump improvement comes from three factors: strength (force production), speed (rate of force development), and technique (efficient movement patterns).
Strength Foundation (Weeks 1-4)
Key Exercises
- Back squats: 4x6 at 75-80% of 1RM — builds quad and glute strength
- Romanian deadlifts: 3x8 — strengthens posterior chain
- Bulgarian split squats: 3x8 each leg — addresses imbalances
- Calf raises: 4x15 — often neglected but critical for push-off
Power Development (Weeks 5-8)
Plyometric Exercises
- Box jumps: 5x3 — focus on maximum height, not reps
- Depth jumps: 4x4 — step off 18-24 inch box, explode upward on landing
- Broad jumps: 5x3 — horizontal power translates to vertical
- Single-leg hops: 3x6 each — basketball often uses one-leg takeoff
Technique Refinement
- Penultimate step: second-to-last step should be longer and lower
- Arm swing: drive arms up forcefully — adds 10-15% to your jump
- Core bracing: tight core transfers leg power to upward motion
Expected Results
With consistent training 3x per week, expect 2-4 inches improvement in 8 weeks. Beginners see faster gains than experienced athletes.
Recovery
Rest 48 hours between jump training sessions. Overtraining tendons causes patellar tendonitis — the most common basketball overuse injury.
