4 Essential Pitching Grips Explained
Four-Seam Fastball
The most common grip in baseball. Place your index and middle fingers across the seams where they are closest together. Your thumb rests underneath on the smooth leather.
Why It Works
The four-seam grip creates maximum backspin, resulting in a straight trajectory with minimal movement. It is the fastest pitch most throwers can deliver.
Two-Seam Fastball
Place your fingers along the seams where they are closest together, running parallel to the seams. This grip creates natural sinking action.
Curveball Grip
Position your middle finger along the seam and your thumb on the opposite seam. Snap your wrist downward on release to create topspin and downward break.
Changeup Grip
Use a circle grip or palming technique to reduce velocity while maintaining arm speed. The key is making the changeup look identical to your fastball from the batter perspective.
