Catcher Gear Checklist: Protection Essentials
The Most Protected Position
Catchers face more physical risk than any other position. A foul tip to an unprotected area can cause serious injury.
Helmet and Mask
Modern catchers use a one-piece hockey-style helmet with integrated mask, or a traditional two-piece.
- Must be NOCSAE certified
- Hockey-style: better protection, heavier
- Traditional: lighter, better visibility, less jaw protection
Chest Protector
- Covers from collarbone to waist
- Shoulder caps must cover the deltoid area
- Adjustable straps for snug fit
- Look for memory foam padding for comfort
Leg Guards (Shin Guards)
- Extend from just below the knee to the top of the foot
- Knee caps should be padded and articulated for kneeling
- Double-knee designs preferred for catchers who squat frequently
Accessories
- Catcher mitt: larger and more padded than fielder gloves (32-34 inches)
- Throat guard: attaches to the mask, protects the neck
- Cup/protective supporter: essential for male catchers
- Thumb guard: prevents hyperextension from foul tips
Fitting Tips
Try on all gear together before purchasing. You should be able to squat, stand, and move laterally without any piece shifting out of position.
