How to Break In a Baseball Glove Fast
Why Breaking In Matters
A stiff new glove makes catching difficult and can cost you plays on the field. Properly breaking in your glove shapes the pocket, softens the leather, and creates a custom fit for your hand. Here are the most effective methods ranked by speed and safety.
Method 1: The Play-In Method (Best Results)
The most reliable way to break in a glove is simply using it. Play catch for 30-60 minutes daily. Throw the ball into the pocket repeatedly. This method takes one to two weeks but produces the best long-term results without risking leather damage.
Method 2: Glove Oil Treatment
Apply a thin layer of glove conditioner or lanolin-based oil to the palm and pocket area. Avoid over-oiling, which can make the leather heavy and soggy. After applying oil, wrap a ball in the pocket with rubber bands and leave overnight.
What to Avoid
- Do not use olive oil, motor oil, or petroleum-based products
- Do not soak the glove in water
- Do not microwave or bake your glove
- Do not use excessive heat from a hair dryer
Method 3: Steam Treatment (Fastest)
Hold the glove over steam from boiling water for 30-60 seconds. The steam softens the leather fibers quickly. Immediately shape the pocket with a ball and pound it with a mallet. This method works in one session but may shorten the glove lifespan.
Maintaining Your Glove
After each season, clean the glove with a damp cloth and apply a light conditioner. Store it in a cool, dry place with a ball in the pocket to maintain the shape. A well-maintained glove can last five to ten seasons.
