Baseball Bat Weight Training: Boost Speed
The Science of Bat Speed
Every 1 mph increase in bat speed adds approximately 1.2 feet to batted ball distance. Weight training can increase bat speed by 5-8 mph over one offseason.
Heavy Bat Swings
Swing a bat 20-30% heavier than your game bat. 3 sets of 10 slow, controlled swings. Strengthens forearms, wrists, and core.
Resistance Band Rotations
Attach band at waist height. Rotate torso against resistance, mimicking swing path. 3 sets of 12 reps per side. Targets obliques and hip rotators.
Medicine Ball Throws
Hold 4-6 lb ball at chest height. Rotate explosively and throw against wall. 3 sets of 8 per side. Develops explosive rotational power.
Wrist and Forearm Work
Wrist curls, reverse curls, and farmer carries. 3 sets of 15 reps. Prevents tennis elbow and wrist tendonitis.
Periodization
- Offseason: Heavier weights, lower reps
- Preseason: Power training, explosive movements
- In-season: Lighter loads, 2x per week
- 48 hours between heavy sessions
