Baseball Pitching Grips: 4 Essential Pitches
The Four-Seam Fastball
The foundation of every pitcher arsenal. Place your index and middle fingers across the wide seams (the horseshoe), with your thumb directly underneath.
Key Points
- Fingers across the seams for maximum backspin
- Thumb centered underneath for stability
- Grip pressure: firm but not white-knuckle tight
The Two-Seam Fastball
Place your index and middle fingers along the narrow seams where they are closest together. This grip creates sidespin that makes the ball sink or run toward the pitcher arm side.
Key Points
- Fingers along the narrow seams, not across
- Apply slightly more pressure with the index finger for movement
- Naturally 1-3 mph slower than the four-seam
The Changeup
The circle changeup: form an OK sign with your thumb and index finger, then place the ball in the circle. This reduces velocity by 8-15 mph while mimicking fastball arm action.
Key Points
- Ball sits deeper in the palm than a fastball
- Arm speed must match the fastball
The Curveball
Place your middle finger on the bottom seam and your thumb on the back of the ball, creating a C shape.
Key Points
- Snap the wrist downward at release to create topspin
- Not recommended for pitchers under age 14
