How to Break In a Baseball Glove Fast (2026)

By Beth Carrasco ·

Why Breaking In Matters

A new glove is stiff and unresponsive. Breaking it in softens the leather, creates a proper pocket, and allows the glove to close naturally around the ball.

Method 1: Glove Oil and Mallet (Recommended)

  1. Apply a small amount of glove oil to the palm, fingers, and hinge area
  2. Use a glove mallet to pound the pocket repeatedly
  3. Shape the glove around a baseball and wrap with rubber bands
  4. Leave overnight and repeat for 3-5 days

Method 2: Hot Water Technique

Run hot (not boiling) water over the glove for 30 seconds to soften the leather. Then shape it around a ball, wrap it, and let it dry overnight.

Method 3: Play Catch

The old-fashioned way. Spend 30 minutes daily playing catch. The natural impact of the ball forms the pocket organically. This takes 2-3 weeks but produces the best long-term results.

What NOT to Do

Maintenance Tips

After breaking in, condition your glove monthly during the season. Store it in a cool, dry place with a ball in the pocket to maintain the shape.
