Baseball Field Dimensions: Youth to Pro Standards
Standard MLB Dimensions
Professional baseball fields have precise specifications:
- Pitching distance: 60 feet, 6 inches from the rubber to home plate
- Base paths: 90 feet between each base
- Outfield fences: typically 325-400 feet from home plate
- Infield: a 90-foot square (the diamond)
Youth Baseball Dimensions by Age
Little League (Ages 9-12)
- Pitching distance: 46 feet
- Base paths: 60 feet
- Outfield fence: 200-225 feet
Intermediate (Ages 11-13)
- Pitching distance: 50 feet
- Base paths: 70 feet
Junior/Senior League (Ages 13-16)
- Pitching distance: 60 feet, 6 inches
- Base paths: 90 feet (same as MLB)
Why Dimensions Change
Shorter distances for younger players account for developing arm strength and running speed. Moving to full-size fields too early leads to excessive throwing stress.
Measuring Your Field
Use a steel tape measure from the back point of home plate to the center of the pitching rubber. For base paths, measure from the back corner of each base.
