Stealing Bases: 5 Tips for Better Success
1. Read the Pitcher
Study the pitcher delivery time to the plate. A delivery over 1.3 seconds gives most runners a good chance. Watch for tells in the windup or leg kick.
2. Get a Good Jump
Start your steal on the first movement toward home plate. Use a short, quick first step rather than a long stride. Lean toward second base in your stance.
3. Slide Technique
Head-first slides are faster but riskier for hand injuries. Feet-first slides are safer and allow you to hook the base. Practice both and choose based on the situation.
4. Know the Count
Stealing on a two-strike count is advantageous because the batter may swing defensively. Avoid stealing on 3-0 counts where the batter is likely taking.
5. Study the Catcher
Check the catchers arm strength and release time during warm-ups. A pop time under 2.0 seconds means you need an excellent jump to be safe.
