Tennis Grip Size Tips: Find Your Perfect Fit
Why Grip Size Matters
The wrong grip size causes tennis elbow, blisters, and poor shot control. A grip that is too small forces you to squeeze harder, while a grip that is too large reduces wrist snap on serves.
The Ruler Test
Place your racket hand flat with fingers together. Measure from the bottom lateral crease of your palm to the tip of your ring finger. This measurement in inches corresponds to your grip size.
Standard Grip Sizes
- 4 inches: Grip size 0 (junior)
- 4 1/8 inches: Grip size 1
- 4 1/4 inches: Grip size 2
- 4 3/8 inches: Grip size 3
- 4 1/2 inches: Grip size 4
- 4 5/8 inches: Grip size 5
The Finger Test
Hold the racket with an eastern forehand grip. You should be able to fit one index finger between your fingertips and the base of your thumb. Too tight or too loose means the grip is wrong.
Overgrip vs Replacement Grip
If you are between sizes, choose the smaller size and add an overgrip (adds about 1/16 inch). Overgrips also absorb sweat and can be replaced frequently.
Signs You Need a Different Size
Pain in the forearm, frequent blisters, or difficulty holding the racket securely during volleys all indicate a grip size mismatch.
