Volleyball Rotation Rules: Complete 2026 Guide
Understanding the Six Positions
A volleyball team has six players on the court in two rows of three. The front row plays near the net and the back row defends the court depth. Each player rotates clockwise through all six positions.
When Rotation Happens
Rotation occurs when the receiving team wins a rally and earns the right to serve. All six players shift one position clockwise before the next serve.
Rotation Order
Players rotate from position 1 (right back, server) through 2 (right front), 3 (middle front), 4 (left front), 5 (left back), and 6 (middle back) before returning to position 1.
Overlap Violations
Before the serve, players must maintain proper positional relationships. A player in the front row must be closer to the net than the corresponding back-row player. Adjacent players must maintain left-right order.
Libero Rules
The libero wears a different colored jersey and plays only in the back row. The libero does not count as a rotation substitution and can replace any back-row player without using a team substitution.
Common Rotation Faults
The most common fault is being out of rotation order when the server contacts the ball. This results in a point and serve for the opposing team.
Strategic Rotations
Coaches arrange lineups so their best hitter is in position 4 (left front) during critical points. Substitution patterns are designed to maximize offensive firepower.
