Gymnastics Scoring System 2026: Full Breakdown
Two-Part Scoring System
Modern gymnastics uses a two-part scoring system established after the 2006 overhaul. Each routine score combines a Difficulty Score (D-score) and an Execution Score (E-score).
Difficulty Score (D-Score)
The D-score starts from zero and adds points for each skill performed. Each element has a predetermined value from A (0.1) through J (1.0). Only the top 8 elements count toward the D-score in most events.
Connection Bonuses
Linking difficult elements without pauses earns connection bonuses of 0.1 or 0.2 points. These bonuses reward fluid, complex routines.
Execution Score (E-Score)
The E-score starts at 10.0 and deductions are subtracted for errors. Judges evaluate technique, artistry, and composition. Common deductions include:
- Small step on landing: -0.1
- Large step or hop: -0.3
- Fall: -1.0
- Bent knees or arms: -0.1 to -0.3
- Lack of amplitude: -0.1 to -0.5
Neutral Deductions
These are subtracted from the final score and include time violations, stepping out of bounds (-0.1 each time), and coaching assistance during the routine.
Apparatus-Specific Rules
Each apparatus has unique composition requirements. For example, the balance beam requires acrobatic elements in both forward and backward directions, and a turn of at least 360 degrees on one foot.
