Soccer Cleats: FG vs AG vs SG Guide
Why Stud Configuration Matters
Wrong stud configuration increases injury risk and reduces performance. Each type is engineered for specific ground conditions.
Firm Ground (FG)
Molded studs for dry natural grass. 11-13 studs in balanced pattern. Good grip without excessive penetration. Most common choice for amateur players.
Artificial Grass (AG)
More studs (14-18), shorter and hollow. Distribute weight on harder synthetic surface. Reduce pressure points on joints. FG on AG increases ACL risk by 25%.
Soft Ground (SG)
Removable metal studs (6-8 total) for wet, muddy grass. Longer studs penetrate soft ground. Never wear on artificial turf.
Making the Right Choice
- Match cleat to your primary surface
- Consider two pairs if you switch surfaces
- Replace when studs wear 2mm+
- Never wear SG metal on artificial turf
