Catcher Gear Checklist: What You Need

Essential Protection

Every catcher needs a helmet with mask, chest protector, shin guards, and a protective cup. Modern gear uses lightweight composite materials for better mobility.

Helmet and Mask

Choose between traditional two-piece (helmet + mask) or hockey-style (single unit). Hockey-style masks offer better protection and visibility but are slightly heavier.

Chest Protector

Look for coverage from collarbone to waist with shoulder caps. Youth models are lighter and shorter. Ensure the protector does not restrict your throwing motion.

Shin Guards

Full-length guards from knee to instep provide the best protection. Double-knee models add extra padding for catchers who spend long games behind the plate.

Catcher Mitt

Catcher mitts are heavily padded with a closed web. Break in your mitt with glove oil and regular use. Expect 2-4 weeks of daily conditioning.
