Catcher Gear Fit Checklist: 8 Things to Verify
Why Proper Catcher Gear Fit Matters
Ill-fitting catcher gear compromises protection and mobility. A chest protector that rides up exposes your midsection. Leg guards that are too long restrict your squat depth.
1. Helmet and Mask Fit
The helmet should sit level on your head with the front edge one inch above your eyebrows. The mask cage should not touch your face when properly secured.
2. Throat Guard Check
Verify the throat guard dangles freely and covers the gap between mask and chest protector. Replace if cracked or bent.
3. Chest Protector Sizing
Measure from the base of your neck to your belly button. The protector should cover from collarbone to navel without riding up during squatting.
4. Shoulder Cap Coverage
Shoulder caps must cover the top of your shoulders without restricting arm movement. Test by raising both arms overhead.
5. Leg Guard Length
Measure from the center of your kneecap to the top of your foot. Guards should cover from mid-thigh to ankle without bunching at the knee.
6. Knee Saver Pads
Check that knee pads align with your kneecap center. Worn-out padding should be replaced immediately.
7. Strap Tension
All straps should be snug but not restrictive. You should be able to fit one finger between strap and skin.
8. Weight Distribution
Full gear should feel balanced. If one piece pulls you forward or backward, adjust strap tension or consider a different size.
