Batting Cage Tips: Maximize Your Practice Time
Structure Your Session
Do not just swing randomly. Divide your cage time into purposeful rounds:
- Round 1 (10 swings): Bunt practice, focus on bat angle and soft hands
- Round 2 (15 swings): Contact hitting, aim for line drives through the middle
- Round 3 (15 swings): Pull hitting, work on getting your front foot down early
- Round 4 (10 swings): Game situation, imagine a specific count and pitch
Timing Tips
- Watch 5-10 pitches before stepping in to calibrate the machine speed
- Start with slower pitches and gradually increase to game speed
- If you are consistently late, move closer to the machine or reduce speed
Stance and Mechanics
- Maintain your game stance, do not develop a cage stance that differs from your real swing
- Focus on one mechanical adjustment per session, not five at once
- Take 3-5 seconds between swings to reset
Mental Approach
Treat each cage swing like an at-bat. Visualize the pitcher, the count, and what pitch you are looking for. Mindless swinging builds bad habits.
Common Cage Mistakes
- Swinging at everything, be selective and take bad pitches
- Trying to hit home runs every swing, line drives build better habits
- Ignoring your lower body, power starts from the legs
